Mission Statement
The Lake Management Department is dedicated to protecting the purposes of the Coeur
d’Alene Indian Reservation through management programs and activities designed to
preserve, protect, restore and promote aquatic and cultural resources within the
historical and cultural territories of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe and to promote and
protect the health, welfare and safety relating to those resources for the benefit
of present and future generations of Tribal members and the public.
To fulfill this mission, the Department shall represent the Tribe’s sovereign interests
at local, regional and national levels and shall seek to take advantage of all opportunities
to protect, enhance and restore aquatic resources for present and future generations.
The Department shall also manage and control those beds and banks of navigable waters
belonging to the Tribe or otherwise subject to Tribal jurisdiction consistent with
Reservation purposes to protect the Tribe’s exclusive use rights in those resources
and with the policy of the Tribe, as expressed through Tribal laws, to provide opportunities
for public use of those resources in specific and well defined ways. In doing so,
the Department shall also seek to protect public health, safety and welfare as related
to these resources. The Department is encouraged to work to the extent practicable
and permissible with other Tribal programs, government agencies and education institutions
to fulfill its mission.
